Nepal’s Supreme Court interlocutory order to not implement Home Ministry circular on citizenship

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Supreme Court has issued an interlocutory order asking the government to not implement the letter circulated by the Home Ministry on ‘conferring citizenship certificate to the children of those who have received citizenship by birth’.
A division bench of justice duo Ishwori Prasad Khatiwada and Sushmalata Mathema issued the order asking the government not to implement the letter sent by the Home Ministry to 77 district administration offices. In the letter, the Home Ministry had told the offices that it could provide citizenship by descent to those whose parents have got citizenship by birth.
The Home Ministry had circulated such letter to the district administration offices on April 2. The SC in the order has said the case would be forwarded to the full bench hearing because it was a serious legal issue. So, the circular’s implementation is halted till the full bench decision, the SC added.
